Four individuals prosecuted in Ho Chi Minh City for producing over 1,000 tons of bean sprouts using hazardous chemicals
Authorities have prosecuted four individuals for using the prohibited chemical 6-Benzylaminopurine to produce over 1,000 tons of bean sprouts, posing severe health risks to consumers.

The Investigation Police Agency of Ho Chi Minh City has officially prosecuted and detained four individuals, including Luu Van Thiep (34) and Lam Van Hung (33), for 'violations of food safety regulations.' The arrests are a significant move against operations threatening public health.

Investigations by the Economic Police Department of Ho Chi Minh City, conducted during a sweep of illicit food production, uncovered violations at three bean sprout facilities in Thong Tay Hoi Ward. Authorities seized 860 plastic vats and hundreds of liters of prepared solution containing 6-Benzylaminopurine, a chemical strictly prohibited for use in food or agricultural production in Vietnam.

The suspects admitted to using 6-Benzylaminopurine, referred to in their internal jargon as 'candy water,' during the soaking process. This chemical artificially accelerates growth, resulting in thicker, heavier, and more visually appealing bean sprouts intended to deceive consumers. Despite knowing the health risks and the legal ban, the suspects continued the illegal practice for profit.

The investigation revealed that since 2022, these facilities had introduced approximately 3 tons of chemically treated bean sprouts into the market daily, primarily supplying markets and eateries in Binh Thanh and Go Vap districts. In total, over 1,000 tons of contaminated product were sold, generating an estimated 8 billion VND in revenue.

Medical experts warn that consuming products contaminated with 6-Benzylaminopurine can lead to acute poisoning, digestive disorders, lung damage, and long-term risks, including birth defects and severe chronic illnesses. Ho Chi Minh City Police are continuing their investigation to ensure all parties involved are held fully accountable under the law.
